Summer Term Newsletter 2 30th April 2004

Dear Parents, Staff and Governors,

May Day Holiday - Please note that the school is closed next Monday; we reopen at 8.50a.m. on Tuesday 4th May.

Head Teacher Appointment-Following two days of rigorous selection procedures, the Governing Body is pleased to inform you that Mr. Christopher Chamberlain, age 37years, has been appointed to the position of Head Teacher of Swindon Village as from 31st August 2004. He is married with 2 boys & a girl: Sam 8, Alex 5 & Sophie 2. He is currently Head Teacher of The John Moore Primary School in Tewkesbury. He established the school, from new, 4 years ago & the number of pupils on roll has risen from 30 to 160. He was previously Deputy Head Teacher at Cirencester Junior & he also taught at Highnam Primary, Abbeymead Primary & Charlton Kings Junior Schools in Gloucestershire. His outside interests include piano playing, amateur dramatics, windsurfing, swimming & camping in France. He is the Chair of Cheltenham Operatic & Dramatic Society. We look forward to working with him & we wish him a happy & successful career in the school.

Rugby - On Wednesday morning we had two mixed teams taking part in a tournament at St. Benedicts along with Christchurch, Gloucester Road, Rowanfield & St. Gregory's. The A team played extremely well & won all of its games by winning 6-0 V Christchurch, 6-2 V Gloucester Road, 6-2 V our B team, 7-4 V Rowanfield & 6-2 V St. Gregory?s. The A team won the St. Benedict's trophy & all of the 8 team members were presented with medals. The B team also played creditably & finished in third position, losing only to our A team. We congratulate the teams on their

performances: A team - Molly Chapman, Samantha Connell (Captain), Ryan Dean, Adam Knowles, Nick Mandella, Dhru Mistry, Ben Slatter & Joe Townsend/B team Ross Evans, Joe Geagan, Aaron Lewis, Tamara Morgan, Jay Privett, Paige Simic, Luke Wellfair & Simon Williams (Captain)

Key Stage 1 Testing - Our Year 2 classes will begin the Key Stage 1 tests next week.

Teacher Training - We welcome back our Year 1 University students from next Tuesday until 19th May.

Governors - We welcome Rob Ellis' appointment to the Governing Body as a coopted governor. He is a previous chair of governors & he is also on the Parish Council. There is a Premises Committee meeting in the staffroom at 7p.m. next Tuesday, 4th May.

Cricket - There is a cricket match against Bishops Cleeve Primary School next Tuesday at home on the S1. Stephen's cricket ground on the park.

Mathematics - Tim Foster, LEA Mathematics' Consultant, is teaching both classes in Year 4 next Wednesday morning.

Cheltenham Competitive Festival- Next Thursday, Mrs. Louise Bradley & Mrs. Wendy Berry will be accompanying our recorder players who will be performing in the Competitive Festival at the Town Hall. We wish them an enjoyable & successful occasion.

Non-uniform Day - Next Friday we are supporting the British Red Cross fundraising day by holding a non-uniform day. The children are invited to wear red to school or to dress their teddy bears in red in return for a donation.

Educational Visit - Next Friday our Year 1 classes will be visiting Nature in Art at Twigworth. They will be involved with sculpture & D & T activities.

100 Club - The 100 Club £30 winner for April is Number 2 - Lesley Hopes.

Help Please - Help would be appreciated in the library & with photocopying over the next few weeks. Please let the office know if you are able to. Thank you.

70's Night - There is an evening of 70's music & dance at the Village Hall at 8p.m. on Saturday 15th May. A buffet is included in the £5 ticket price. If you are interested please contact Sally Stennett on 514650 or Debbie Styman on 692760.
